The Good, the Bad, and the, um, Chris Issacs….

By: Anne | May 22nd, 2007

Given the choice, most people would probably rather start off with the good news. Or, if they can take it, the bad. But let me start off with a bit of an introduction.

I’m Anne, and this is the California Victory blog. Victory is a new USL team here in San Francisco. They are owned by businessman Dmitry Piterman, who also owns Deportivo Alaves, in Vitoria-Gasteiz, Spain. From time to time this blog may have an update or two on Alaves.

The Victory has players of all different experiences, from MLS to Mexico to European stints in Belgium and Denmark. Most Victory players have ties to California, whether from high school, college, or other leagues. Hopefully we will be able to get a couple of interviews with a few players.

On to the- well - bad news. Unfortunately the Victory is off to a bit of a rough start. They won a Cinco de Mayo exhibition game against Mexico Club Nexaca 1-0, but have since lost their following two (home) games. Badly. 3-1 to the Rochester Raging Rhinos, and, um, 3-1 to the Vancouver Whitecaps.

But here is the good news. The Victory have only been together for a few months, while many of the other teams have been together for a few seasons. Some very good talent has started to emerge over the past few games, including midfielder Ricardo Sanchez, midfielder Omar Aguayo, forward Yuri Morales and many more.

More good news is that orphaned Bay Area (read: Earthquakes) fans are happy once again to be able to attend live games. All levels of fans, from high school, college, etc… are happy to have a team to support, even if Kezar Stadium in Golden Gate Park can be a tad chilly. Even the local Arsenal Army from the Mad Dog in the Fog and Kezar Pub have traded in an evening of yelling at the TV to an evening of yelling at the, uh, Vancouver Sh*tecr*ps.

And there is, of course, the “1906″ Victory supporters club, several of whom were featuring hand-knit blue and white scarves at last weeks game. How awesome is that?!

So that leaves us with, er, Chris Issacs. Honestly, I love me some local SF Chris Issacs just as much as the next person. But I was a little confused at the selection of “San Francisco Days” to play during halftime. I’m all for the happiness, but is that the message we want to send to our opponents. What about 2Pac’s “California Love” next time?

Ok, ok, maybe that’s not quite family friendly. But surely there are some other options?

Welcome Anne. Thanks for the intro and looking forward to reading more, especially when CV plays the Timbers in a few days!

This is why I love The Offside - how else would I ever stumble across a California Victory blog?

What size crowds do they get? Hopefully I’ll catch a game next time I’m in the Bay Area, sounds like fun.

    Welcome!

Welcome, Anne! I wondered if we were going to see some USL blogs here.

(Don’t feel bad about losing to Vancouver. Everybody loses to Vancouver. Take it from a Seattlite.)

The first two games they drew a tad over 1,000 for each. San Fran is a tough market for soccer. They play at Kezar Stadium, which is right in Golden Gate Park. Definitely worth a visit if you are in the area.

Bob, why is SF a tough market for soccer? Sophisticated folks, disposable income, high population density…If you built a stadium near BART you could draw from the East Bay…Just curious.

I’m in the Bay Area regularly so I’ll definitely check this out.

Really? Kezar?? I leave the bay area for 6 months and THIS happens (although I suppose the Victory could have been there for 10 years and I wouldn’t have known any better)?

To give some context to Kezar, it was the home of the 49ers before they moved to Candlestick (and anyone that has been to the Stick knows how old THAT place is)… for like 25 years! Seriously, my great great grandfather could have gone to games at Kezar if he was a football fan. In fact, the 49ers that played there had a QB who really WAS a 49er from the gold rush days. Ok, that last one is a bit of an exaggeration, but Kezar? KEZAR????

Watch out for early morning games in August, Anne! Wouldn’t want you to catch a cold and/or freeze to death.

Tom, I should clarify by saying it is a difficult market for lower division soccer. The Victory won’t be able to compete with the other sports teams for media coverage and they will have a hard time competing with the million other things going on in the city. Plus there is always the Mark Twain weather adage about the worst winter he ever spent was a summer in San Fran.

The city undoubtedly has a good soccer fan base. I’m not sure that the Victory will have the money or the know-how to tap into it. The low numbers for the first couple of games are concerning. I’ve seen a lot of teams come and go over the years in USL and the ones that don’t make it almost always start with low attendance from the beginning.

I want them to do well since the league really needs another team on the west coast. Hopefully the owner doesn’t just see them as a feeder club for his team in Spain.

“Hopefully the owner doesn’t just see them as a feeder club for his team in Spain.”

That’s cute, Bob. I like to think of the Rapids as a feeder club for Arsenal, too.

Good to have my old podcast partner on board. Go Victory (as long as they’re not playing the Timber, or the Rochester Raging Rhinos).

Oh, too funny. I just listened to one of your podcasts the other day, linked to through Ian’s third-person personal data page. Good stuff!
