Holy Smokes!
By: Anne | June 8th, 2007I’m still in shock this morning, but it’s a fantastic shock, as the California Victory upset #1 ranked Vancouver Whitecaps 1-0 yesterday. The Vic’s defense looked about 900% improved from their past few games, and goalkeeper Eric Reed made some fantastic saves.
The Vic’s goal came just before halftime, as Ricardo Sanchez launched one of his great corner kicks, and Yuri “the Fury” Morales finished the job by tapping it in.
The Vic’s had a great game, displaying lots of skill that wasn’t quite apparent in previous games. Matt Fitzgerald had a great game, showing all kinds of hustle, as well as midfielder Jose Retiz.
And while I normally try and stay away from trashing the ref, I couldn’t believe it when he added 5 MINUTES of injury time at the end. Neither could the Vic’s head coach Glenn Van Straatum, who looked to be quite upset. It was torture for the Vic’s fans. And yes, we all know from the Vic’s announcer that “Official time is kept by the Referee,” but my friend actually timed the injury time- and the whistle wasn’t blown for over 6 minutes!!
Never the less, last night’s win was awesome, and I’m pretty sure all the Vic’s fans are looking forward to our game against Minnesota on Sat night.

Congratulations on beating the Craps. They seem to be a team the Victory match up with well. Sorry to see only 563 in attendance though. Does the club do any marketing or get any press coverage?

It was a great match to be a part of. I’m glad that I was there to witness history in the making. Retiz did show great improvement but what did you think of him kicking the ball in frustration at that kid?

The attendance situation is pretty bad, almost as bad as Miami’s. Great win for the Victory, though … hopefully it will help get a few more butts in the seats.

Well, it’s important to remember that it was a mid-week game, and commutes in the Bay Area are tough enough- without trying to get to Golden Gate Park by 7. I would be curious to see the # of people watching via USL. Also, the numbers for Saturday’s game should be interesting.
As for the Reitz incident, I only saw part of it, although I have seen other eyebrow-raising behavior incidents. Guess I’m trying to reserve harsh judgment of players until further on in the season. But I would like to interview a few of them and ask them specifics.

We will see what the attendance looks like Saturday it should be improved. There is a group of us from the supporters group meeting with the team to see what we can do to help promote the team. A real grassroots effort with their support. It was great to get a win and we should get 3 more points Saturday.
